Harvard Dining s Sustainable Food Practices - 2181 Words

When Yale Dining’s first fully sustainable menu rolled out at Berkeley College in 2003, it achieved immediate success. Often, these standards have varying levels of monitoring and actual sustainability impacts, while also posing significant differences in costs. In deciding between one standard and another, Yale Dining has made choices that sacrificed environmental sustainability for financial sustainability. One primary reference is the US National Organic Standards set by the National Food Production Act. Under the Act, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) manages the National Organic Program (NOP) that defines organic standards and processes. For example, if a product contains at least 95% organic ingredients it may be labelled as organic. In addition, organic products are subject to stringent crop production and livestock management standards, such as implementing buffer zones and organic animal feed. These standards are supposed to lead to greater environmental sustainability and safety, although the impacts have been debated. The plurality of

Alexander the Great, a patient and often devious m Essay Example For Students

Alexander the Great, a patient and often devious m Essay an; had never struck without careful planning. The youthful, headstrong Alexander liked to settle problems by immediate action. Making decisions with great speed, he took extraordinary risks; his success was achieved by the amount of sheer force and drive to overcome these risks. Alexander was one of the greatest and most courageous fighters in the world. He was educated as a student by the Greek philosopher Aristotle. The philosopher imbued Alexander with a love of Greek art and poetry, and instilled in him a lasting interest in Philosophy and science. Within a year of his accession, Alexander extended his dominions northward toward the Danube River and westward towards the Adriatic Sea. He then turned his attention to Greece where Thebes and Athens were threatening to bolt the league with weapons purchased with Persian gold. Also, Athens and Thebes were to unite in war against Macedon. In 335 B.C. Alexander decided to punish the city for what he regarded as treachery; .The city was destroyed and its people sold into slavery or killed. All of the city_s buildings were destroyed except for temples and the house of Pindar the poet. Pindar was long dead, but Alexander wanted to prove that even a Macedonian conqueror could be a Hellene. The savage lesson of Thebes brought results, the Athenian assembly quickly congratulated Alexander, and the Greek states, with Sparta as the continuing exception, remained Macedonian allies. Alexander now took on a project that Philip had planned but never carried out: an invasion of Persia. He decision to do this was purely a political one. For a century Persia had interfered increasingly in Greek affairs and had constantly oppressed the Greek cities in Asia Minor. Alexander had personal reasons too. Avid for glory and for identification with Greece, Alexander knew no better way to win both than by attacking Greece_s ancient foe. In some ways the invasion, the longest military campaign ever undertaken, was a reckless undertaking. It required a large army to move an enormous distance from its supply bases, through and unfamiliar country, against a power incalculably rich in money and men. Furthermore, Persia was governed by a patriotic and devoted military caste that was egar to show its strength in war. However the enemy had a weakness. The current king, Darius III, had come to the throne through the murder of his predecessor and was highly incompetent._Darius was no leader-in fact, he was not even a brave man. The best of his generals and satraps might have been able to compensate for his shortcomings, but the rigidly structured hierarchy of the Empire did not give them a chance._ Besides the fact that Persia was poorly ruled, Alexander was counting on another shortcoming of the Persian Empire to aide in his conquest. The Persian Empire_s subject were unloyal to and had very little affection towards their ruler(s) and would be unlikely to resist and invading army. In 334 B.C. Alexander crossed the Hellespont. Something that his father had planned but not fully achieved. He defeated the Persian forces that were gathered on the Asian side of the River Granicus. After this victory Alexander sent three hundred suits of Persian armor back to Athens. The message that went with them read, _Alexander, the son of Philip, and the Greeks, except the Spartans, have won this spoil from the barbarians of Asia,_ thus expressing in one brief and self-assured sentence his contempt for the Persians, his even greater contempt for the Spartans, and his conviction that he was furthering a Greek cause. _Of all the generals of the ancient world Alexander was surely the greatest. He possessed an almost clairvoyant insight into strategy and was a consummately resourceful tactician. Alexander could be compared to Napoleon in swiftness and in movement, but Alexander could be patient as well. As he showed in his siege of the fortress of Tyre, which lasted for about seven months. .u7f7dcb8230ea20c1b04c4bcbdef580f2 , .u7f7dcb8230ea20c1b04c4bcbdef580f2 .postImageUrl , .u7f7dcb8230ea20c1b04c4bcbdef580f2 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u7f7dcb8230ea20c1b04c4bcbdef580f2 , .u7f7dcb8230ea20c1b04c4bcbdef580f2:hover , .u7f7dcb8230ea20c1b04c4bcbdef580f2:visited , .u7f7dcb8230ea20c1b04c4bcbdef580f2:active { border:0!important; } .u7f7dcb8230ea20c1b04c4bcbdef580f2 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u7f7dcb8230ea20c1b04c4bcbdef580f2 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u7f7dcb8230ea20c1b04c4bcbdef580f2:active , .u7f7dcb8230ea20c1b04c4bcbdef580f2:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u7f7dcb8230ea20c1b04c4bcbdef580f2 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u7f7dcb8230ea20c1b04c4bcbdef580f2 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u7f7dcb8230ea20c1b04c4bcbdef580f2 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u7f7dcb8230ea20c1b04c4bcbdef580f2 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u7f7dcb8230ea20c1b04c4bcbdef580f2:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u7f7dcb8230ea20c1b04c4bcbdef580f2 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u7f7dcb8230ea20c1b04c4bcbdef580f2 .u7f7dcb8230ea20c1b04c4bcbdef580f2-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u7f7dcb8230ea20c1b04c4bcbdef580f2:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Agriculture In US Essay The old port of Tyre had been abandoned for some time, and the Tyrians were now securely enclosed behind massive walls on an island that was half a mile from the shore. Watching their eyes light up, seeing the excitement, they have when meeting their favorite characters, cannot be any more magical. Disneyland is a place where the impossible is possible. Everything you could ever imagine, which is why it’s so magical. It has a reputation for going beyond, for the many visitors. The personal essay appears to be one of the richest and most vibrant of all literary forms. The personal essay is also one of the most popular forms of creative nonfiction. That is why the more practice you have the better your writing is. There is one more way to get an excellent grade for your personal essay order it here. Personal Essay Structure The simplest structure of a personal essay has three parts: an introduction, body of information and a conclusion. The Introduction You can begin your personal essay with a captivating or interesting sentence that incredibly hooks your readers. Always remember that you want them to read more. Are you out of topic ideas? The truth is that some days you will brim over with countless topics to write about. On other days, you will have such a difficult time to even create a single idea. When you lack topic ideas, write stream of consciousness open a blank document and pen down whatever comes into your mind without stopping until you have three pages. Yes, it is a mind dump! Repeat this technique every time you are blank and discover the magic. The Body The body of your personal essay comprises of 1-3 paragraphs that inform your readers about the topic you introduced. To ensure your thoughts are organized, an outline can be more than helpful before starting. Remember to put your paragraphs in the same structure as your entire essay. Start with sentences that introduce the point and draws a reader in. The middle sentences of a paragraph should offer information about a point. Have a concluding sentence that drives your views home and leads a reader to the next point. Every new idea should be a signal to begin a new paragraph. Every paragraph ought to be a logical progression from a previous idea and lead to the following idea. It can also lead to the conclusion. Ensure your paragraphs are relatively short. Ten lines are always magical. There is no doubt that if you write concisely, you can say loads in ten lines. The Conclusion In your conclusion, close your personal essay with a final paragraph that perfectly summarizes the points, which you have made, and states your final opinion. Your conclusion provides you the opportunity to offer the lessons or insights learned. You can also choose to share how you will be or were changed due to your approach to the topic. The rule of thumb is that incredible conclusions are always tied to your opening paragraph. Personal Essay Writing Tips Show and tell.  The main difference between a piece of creative short fiction and a personal essay is that in the first one you must show but not tell, and in a personal essay, you must both show and tell.  You need to turn on readers imagination giving them useful information. Use your personal point of view.  In a short story, you write about a situation and characters that create it. In a personal essay, you are expected to give your own comments and express your opinion. A reader needs to feel that both the situation and its participants concern you very much. Ideas.  Ideas should be taken from your life. Everything that inspires you and makes you want to write will make an ideal subject for an essay. Some little things or extremely important issues may inspire you, so get ready to keep your diary with you and write down all the details! The hook (humor and quotes).  Remember that the reader is not obliged to read your article so you have less than 10 seconds to attract readers attention. It is recommended to start the first sentence or a paragraph with a bang and get the reader’s interest immediately. Some writers use humor or serious quotes to get the reader’s attention. Use the first-person active voice.  You are the narrator and so you must speak for yourself. Try to avoid informal language. The style of your personal essay should be more conversational than in other literary papers, but don’t make it too easy and boring. Be concise.  Different publications require different format but one thing is consistent: concise writing will always make a good personal essay. When editing, cut the fluff, be specific, and make each word matter. Connect.  The personal essay is personal, but the main idea should be recognizable to your readers if you want to make a connection with them. The wider your audience, the higher your chances for publication. What Makes an Exciting Personal Essay? There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ essay topic; one of the winning essay topics is something related to people. The broader the audience your subject relates to, the more successful your essay. It makes no difference whether you are discussing some philosophical issues or you are posting about the laundry detergent you have recently bought. Dibs in Search of Self (Axline) - Review Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Dibs in Search of Self (Axline) - Review - Essay Example Her insight, comprehension of character, patience, and counseling expertise are apparent throughout, and the book could serve as a manual of clinical counseling strategies. It seems to me that four key themes run through Dr. Axline’s approach: 1. The individuality of each person, 2. The necessity of possessing an optimistic attitude that the individual can be helped, 3. Respect for the individual as a prerequisite for facilitating mental growth, 4. Allowing the individual – rather than the counselor – to lead. Possibly, however, those four themes could be collapsed into one: the all-abiding belief that the human individual is unique, that he has potential and that, when listened to and unconditionally accepted, this potential may flourish. Axline, therefore, seems to be a humanistically-oriented psychologist (of the Rogerian school of counseling), even though play therapy is, undoubtedly, behaviorally inclined.
